Around The Tournaments

Men’s & Women’s Championships (Cheltenham Croquet Club 14-18 June 2017)

Gabrielle acquitted herself well at the Men’s & Women’s Championships. In the Women’s she won her block to qualify for the KO stage, where she lost in a deciding game at the semi final stage having been 1-0 up.

In the Mixed Doubles she and partner Keith Aiton finished equal top of their block but lost a play off so failed to progress to the KO stage. Gabs won the 2016 edition of this event partnering David “The Beast” Maugham.

British Open Championships (The Hurlingham Club 1-9 July 2017)

Club members Gabs & Phil Cordingley will be playing in these. The Singles Championship draw has been made. Too complicated to explain in detail how the format works, but roughly you need to win six out of your first eleven singles games to qualify for a Bo3/5 KO stage. More as the tournament progresses.

Gabs and Phil will be partnering each other in the Doubles Championship, hoping to emulate some of their recent success for Middlesex at the Inter County Championship.

We can take up to four guests per day, so if club members would like to do some spectating let me know on what day and I’ll see what can be done.

Club Members Steer Middlesex to 3rd in 2017 Inter-County Championship

Gabrielle Higgins & Phil Cordingley helped steer the Middlesex County Association Croquet Team to third place in the top division of the Croquet Association’s Inter-County Championship played at Southwick and Compton (Eastbourne) over the Bank Holiday weekend. The result was particularly creditable considering that due to the absence of key players at the European GC Championship held in Spain the same weekend, the team’s primary goal was simply to maintain First Division status for next season. Indeed having lost all three matches on the first day, even this looked like a big ask. But the team showed its mettle by winning all seven remaining matches, no fewer than five by the maximum margin of 3-0. Indeed had they won rather than lost their final match on the first day against hot favourites and eventual champions Nottinghamshire, Middlesex would have been crowned champions instead!

Gabs and Phil played doubles together in the final three rounds, winning all three. They will team up next in the 2017 British Open Doubles Championship to be played at the Hurlingham Club from 1-9 July. Watch this space!

Roehampton Golf Croquet Tournament

The competition had 16 entrants divided into 2 groups: 0-6 handicaps and 7-12 (max) handicaps.
The competition was played as a “round robin” with everybody playing 4 matches on Monday and 3 matches on Tuesday.
There were 4 immaculate croquet lawns including 1 which was totally enclosed by a beautiful walled garden!
It was our first tournament and after a slow start on Monday we improved on the 2nd day. However, “no cigar”!

A quick visit from a member of the New York Croquet Club in Central Park

Phil Cordingley played Jim Collins on Tuesday morning.  Luckily, it did not hail or snow! The sun came out to welcome our guest in perfect English tradition! Just missed a warm cup of tea.

Jim sent a very nice email to the committee and formally extended an invitation to our members to play on their NY green in Central Park. So if you ever are in NY, I will send you Jim’s email.  Jim says “I know our members would look very forward to “international” play”.

Swishing!

Dear members,

I had a brief demonstration in “swishing” the lawn which is necessary to do if you start playing at PH at 9am:

Get the yellow stick from the cupboard, extend it, but not too much, and sway the rod over the lawn in a gentle manner back and forth as if watering the lawn. Do cover the whole lawn, the process should not take more than 5 minutes.

Introducing a Beginners Group at HHCC!

Just like learning any sport or language, it is rather nicer to do it as a groupIt is quite intimidating for new players to be thrown in with the high caliber players in our club. So we would like to give the possibility for our beginners club members to learn to play together and progress as a group.  This group is to be free for our members. This group will meet every week for one hour (first at GHP, then at PH) and be coachedby one of our more experience member. This group is also be open to new players who are not members. They would pay £10 per session, redeemable if they join the club. The best time to do this is first thing on Saturday morning and start as soon as the season opens. We believe it is a great way to get new players, increase members’ confidence in the game and bring a collegial feeling to the club.

Do let me know if you would like to join or may be you have friends who would like to start playing:  secretary@hampsteadheathcroquetclub.org.uk

New Hi-Lo Doubles Competition

In parallel with the Club Handicap Singles Championship (for the Ian Harrison Salver), this season we will be running a Hi-Lo Doubles competition. Members enter as individuals, and when entries close will be paired up according to their handicaps: highest handicap entry will partner lowest, second highest will partner second lowest, and so on. Watch this space for further details, or email the Competitions Secretary to enter.
